Laminate flooring created by heating and pressing several layers of materials together. The higher the heat and the more pressure that applied, the more durable the flooring tends to be. Laminates rated on a scale that ranges from AC1 to AC5. AC1 rated flooring is generally a low quality laminate with minimal durability. On the other end of the scale, a flooring with an AC5 rating is great for commercial use and high traffic areas. The trade off, but, is that the highest heat and pressurization causes a rougher finish. The best laminates for homes will be those in the AC2 to AC3 range. because they will be durable yet still have a smooth, more natural finish.

The stabilizing or base layer is often coated with a substance. that increases water resistance. A core layer is then laid over the base, followed by a decorative layer. that gives it the appearance of made of wood, tile or stone. The core is sometimes also coated with a resin to increase durability. and water resistance. The final layer is a protective layer. which sometimes includes a UV treatment to protect against sun damage. High pressure laminate (HPL) is generally created by using 5 layers. rather than 4 and fused together at 1300+ PSI.

Embossing takes place in the heating process. As the laminates heated up. a metal plate that contains a pattern pressed into the surface material. This creates convex and concave ridges in the laminate, which gives it a more natural look. Since laminates created by taking a picture of a natural material. and laying the picture on top of base layers. they lack the natural grain and texture of raw materials. The embossing process gives the laminate a grain or a texture that. makes it almost indistinguishable from flooring . made of natural materials like wood or stone.

This means that the texturing actually follows the patterns in the image. Embossing can also used to match grain or give the surface a 'distressed' look.

It can also just be its own thing, specific to laminate floors. Where hand-scraping could leave texturing with ridges. not uncomfortably high ones, of course. it is to walked upon - the embossing on a laminate floor tends to be extremely smooth. You will not get a splinter from the gentle ripples of an embossed laminate floor.

If you run your hand over the flooring options, you’ll notice something remarkable surface textures. You feel fine indentations that match the underlying photograph of a wood plank. like the grain of a plank cut from a tree. The embossing that creates the indentations must align with the image of the wood. or stone to achieve this realistic 3-dimensional appearance. This precise alignment known as embossed-in-register (EIR). The embossed physical grain of the wear layer married to the image film.

Why does vinyl flooring matter if the minute indentations. in the flooring duplicate the original wood or stone? It creates a level of realism that can’t achieved in any other way. It looks and feels right. The perfect match between the embossing. and photograph also results in depth of color like the natural material. At Stone Barn composite flooring. our customers should expect nothing less from high quality luxury vinyl flooring.
