Although many people assume that OSB, MDF are the same thing.  they are different in their construction, uses and strength. They are all engineered woods that used in construction projects. but they are not interchangeable. Contractors and carpenters are able to guide you in deciding. which boards would be best for the project you have in mind.  OSB -  Oriented Strand Board 


       OSB is an engineered wood building materials product. formed by rectangular wood strands (flakes) arranged in cross-oriented layers. use waste wood or wood chips. with the help of waterproof adhesives. The manufacturing process result is a structural engineered wood panel. like plywood in strength and performance. but more uniform and less expensive. 


      OSB board can also called Australian pine, which is a kind of MDF from Australia. With the characteristics of fine fiber and white color. it recognized and loved by peers and consumers.


       Oriented Strand Board as a wastewood product is a widely used, versatile structural wood panel. Manufactured from sawdust mixed waterproof heat-cured adhesives. and shaped wood strands that arranged in cross-oriented layers. 


       OSB is an engineered wood panel that shares many of the strength. and performance characteristics of plywood. 


      OSB wood composite and adhesives creates a strong. stable panel that resists deflection, delamination, and warping; likewise, panels resist racking. and shape distortion when subjected to demanding wind and seismic conditions.       OSB panel has certain requirements for raw material screening before production and processing. It must first peeled and cut. then cleaned to ensure that there are no impurities. and then sanded by precision equipment.

      OSB boards have a very characteristic aesthetic. that has incorporated into architectural design. These boards made of wood chips pressed in perpendicular layers. and bonded with resin applied at high pressure and temperature. They have good mechanical strength and rigidity. 


       Besides to their good sound insulation, they have no empty spaces inside them. and no knots or cracks, so they are very uniform. They are also ecological and durable against the outdoors. and the action of rain, humidity, wind, and heat. Besides, the boards are recyclable. But, since they have a rough surface, it is impossible to apply laminated products onto them.

what is the MDF?

 

       Medium density fiberboard, commonly abbreviated as MDF. The main raw materials are wood fiber and other plant fibers. The wood-based panels pressed with resin or glue divided into high-density board. medium-density board and low-density board according to the internal proportion.


      Medium density fiberboard, commonly abbreviated as MDF. is a man-made wooden material used for a variety of building purposes in and outside the home. such as flooring and furniture. MDF made from wood fibers that glued together with heat and pressure.


     MDF is easily recognizable in your local home improvement store. as it comes in packs of smooth, uniform wooden panels. and is frequently worked with due to its unique fiberboard properties. that make it ideal for certain situations in comparison to other wood products.


       Medium-density fiberboard (MDF). is an engineered wood product formed from wood fibers. obtained from breaking down hardwood and softwood with a defibrator. The wood fibers are then glued together using wax and resin adhesive. They  made into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. The resulting smooth wood product has no wood grain. and shares many characteristics with particle board. But, MDF is  stronger particle board.

      MDF sheets is often used when a nice, clean look desired from the finished product. MDF is less expensive than real wood. and is easier to stain and smooth. but at the cost of lacking the imperfections that make real wood feel luxurious.


  MDF panel used in foreign countries for the production of furniture. The material is soft and resistant to pressure. The relevant standards for domestic MDF are lower than those of foreign countries. so the quality of MDF in China still needs to be .


  MDF wood In the production system, the sheet with the density in the range of 0.50~0.88 is medium and high density fiberboard. The strength of the high density board is poor. If the screw is loose after screwing, it is very difficult to fix it.


  Although many furniture are now using high-density boards. there are many glues used in production. so it is necessary to pay attention to whether the formaldehyde content. exceeds the standard.

      MDF boards made of wood fibers bonded by synthetic resin. and compressed through pressure and heat, resulting in a solid. and very uniform board with good finish and durability. Because the fibers oriented, the machine can cut them in any direction. delivering a smooth surface to the touch. the board does not resist water well, but there do exist options on the market. that are more resistant to moisture and sometimes even fire.


      Currently, MDF boards are the most used material for carpentry. as they are compatible with many different finishes. including simple and lacquered paint, glued from natural sheets or melamines. or even pattern printing. But they can also used elsewhere, such as in wall and door claddings.

MDF

      The HDF (High Density Fiberboard) is very like the MDF. though their manufacturing processes differ. Being compressed under higher pressure, these boards are more resistant, support more weight. and can cover larger extensions.


       Chipboard created by pressing wood debris, such as sawdust and dust, with resin and glue. Over time, this material has given way to other solutions such as the MDF or its nearest replacement, the MDP. It can finished with paints and varnishes, but they rarely stick. since the surface is not smooth or uniform. The main advantage of this agglomerate is its low cost. Its uses are like MDF, but specific types of hardware and connections. must used to get a satisfactory result.


Plywood


      Plywood boards made of overlapping wood sheets glued and heat pressed. as with cross laminated timber (CLT), cross-directional fibers in plywood. allow the board to withstand greater stress.


      Plywood's use is quite varied. It can used for furniture, floors, ceilings, doors, and countertops among others. It is also compatible with paints and glues of natural sheets or melamine.
