The chips in the surface layer are thinner than those in the middle layer. so the surface of the particle board is denser and more compact than the middle.


       In standard particle board, urea formaldehyde used as glue. The amount of glue in a particle board is 10%. and many coated board products classified in surface material emissions class M1. Material classification. includes the limit values for the emissions of building materials meant for interiors. as well as their classification.

     The density of particle board varies between 650 and 750 kg/m³, so it is heavier than sawn conifer timber.

       MFC veneer core stands for ‘laminate used melamine faced chipboard.  and the vast majority of office furniture manufactured with this material. There are some thicknesses used, but the industry standard is 25mm thick. Some budget ranges are 18mm thick. 


       Most people think of particle board with melamine. the low grade, unattractive material favoured. by high street furniture stores in the 1980’s. but todays MFC has come on a long way. MFC is either of a real wood grain, which printed onto a Melamine film, and heat processed onto a sheet of chipboard.


       The quality of that melamine sheets chipboard depends on the density of the board. Many domestic furniture uses low density board, which is light. Most commercial grade furniture made of a dense board – as it stops flexing and bending. The finished board is then cut to shape and size, edged with a banding machine to protect the edges.


      These panels can then used to make furniture. and it’s used in desks, workstations, cupboards and pedestals. The colours available vary from factory to factory. There are some common finishes that used, and whilst they all tend to be the same grain pattern. they can vary from source in shade and grain pattern. MFC is available in a large number of plain colours as well, and special finishes too.

       MDF also takes well to painting. Putting on a primer and a couple of coats of paint will leave a nice finished surface. which does not happen with other composite wood products. MDF also has minimal reaction to moisture. This means MDF will not warp or swell when used in environments that have a high humidity.

        processed melamine resin used in woodworking treated. and safe to use in project construction.  Not to get too technical, but melamine is a chemical with a lot of nitrogen. It used in the recent pet food scandal because they sell their product based on protein content. The simple QC tests for protein look only for nitrogen, not the proteins themselves. 


        Since protein also has a lot of nitrogen in it, the bad guys could. make their product look like it had a higher protein content by adding melamine. The tests, looking for nitrogen, couldn’t discern where the nitrogen came from and so. upon testing, the product looked good. Dishonest, unethical and dangerous! Melamine resin (plastic laminate) made when the chemical melamine combined with formaldehyde. Yes, that formaldehyde. 


       But not to worry, both of these changed and locked up in very large molecules that are not active. they’re unavailable to react in people. The non-chemist fearmongers out there. worry about combining two poisons to make a kitchen counter. Still, Formica has been around since 1912, and I know of no one dead or injured by their countertops. 


       The only danger I know of to a woodworker using melamine resin laminates is the dust hazard like sawdust. The small particles are the problem, not their chemical composition.

(1) Whether the melamine board. used to make furniture polluted by air depends on the medium density board. or particle board. If the formaldehyde emission of the substrate reaches the standard.  there will be no excessive formaldehyde.


(2) The substrate is also good, the finish is good, and the edge is the key to the cabinet. The advantages and disadvantages of the edge-sealing material. It is important to note that it is not sealed on all six sides. Formaldehyde-free adhesive used has more volatile gases in the production process. strict sealing beneficial to the environmental protection of the living room.


(3) the melamine finish is better than other finished furniture. The melamine board is. wear-resistant, scratch-resistant

      some references stating lignin. can used as a binder (a occurring substance found in plants). it still seems urea- formaldehyde based products rule the roost.


       One of the big problems with formaldehyde is it’s a substance that keeps on giving. Products containing formaldehyde will continue to off-gas for years. It’s for this reason plus the fact MDF is also susceptible to moisture. that it’s recommended medium-density fibreboard  should sealed with paint. Painting MDF doesn’t solve the problem though – it locks it away.


       While MDF can recycled. the processes for doing so are new and recycling drop-off locations seem to be few and far between. The UK appears to be the leader in MDF recycling at this point. Landfill is still the most common final resting place for MDF. where chemicals will leach out over time. contaminating groundwater.


     Other toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). may also be off-gassed for a few months after manufacture.On the (somewhat) brighter side; it seems MDF uses less in the way of binders than particle board.


        As the levels of formaldehyde based binders will also vary between brands and grade. asking about off-gassing/binder and other potential environmental contaminants. while at your local hardware store may be worthwhile. 


       Just to clarify, by “formaldehyde-free”, I mean in reference to binding agents. all wood has some level of naturally-occurring formaldehyde.For low/no-VOC Medium-density fibreboard. prepared to pay more for it; but it should still be cheaper than “natural” wood.


      but mdf melamine manufactured from a combination of real wood and recyclable products. so it is environmentally friendly
